Modified MRC for dyspnoea scale what is untrue
MRC means the Medical research council. This was devised by Fletcher and co-workers in coal workers for grading breathlessness in COPD patients in 1940. It was published in 1952.
The modified MRC scale starts from 0 grade and the last one is grade 4, MRC scale starts from grade 1 to grade 5.
Breathlessness at rest is not part of modified MRC. (Davidson Edtion 22 page 674) or even MRC scale
The severity of lung damage in COPD is assessed by Lung function test, but this poorly correlates with clinical status. So to grade clinical severity in COPD Modified MRC scale is used.
Modified MRC scale
Garde 0 No breathless, except strenuous exercise
Grade 1 Breathlessness when hurrying on level or walking uphill
Grade 2 Walks slower than counterparts on level ground because of breathlessness or has to stop for breath when walking at own pace
Garde 3 Stops for breath after walking about 100mts or after few minutes on level ground
Grade 4 Too breathless to leave the house, or breathless when dressing or undressing.
