Identify the Endo-Ice

Endo ice is chemically 1,1,1,2 tetrafluoroethane used as one of the cold testing material for pulp vitality. A cotton pellet is soaked with endo-ice and it is then applied on the tooth being tested for at least 5 seconds which stimulates the nerve fibers of the pulp. Endo ice is much colder than ice or ethyl chloride and its temperature is -260.

Interpretations of the endo-ice cold test:

Pulp Response 
Positive response Healthy pulp
Short sharp pain that disappears rapidly once the stimulus is removed Reversible pulpitis
A painful response that remains even after the stimulus is removed Reversible pulpitis
No response Non-vital tooth

Advantage of endo ice as compared to ice:

Ice melts rapidly in the mouth causing false-positive results as the cold water from the ice which is being melted comes in contact with the adjacent teeth. Such problems are overcome with the endo-ice. Hence endo-ice is a much better tool than ice.
