Explanation


In 10% of people, following drowning, the first gasp may cause severe laryngospasm leading to asphyxia and death.

In remaining laryngeal muscle relax water enters the lungs. Depending on the type of water i.e freshwater or ocean water manifestation differ

Freshwater drowning

Water entered into the lungs gets absorbed immediately as it is dilute compared to plasma. Thus plasma expands and becomes hypotonic.

Ocean water drowning

Water entered into the lungs is hypertonic this draws plasma thus plasma shrinks.

Treatment

The immediate goal in the treatment of drowning is resuscitation, followed by treatment of circulatory effects of the water in the lungs.
